Seems like that's what happens to too many people - the lust for money, position and/or power cause them to, figuratively or actually, "lose their humanity" and "sell their souls" to achieve whatever it is that most eludes, attracts or motivates them.

One thing I recognise, it's easy and costs little to be a nice person when your balls are not on the line.
There are a lot of nice people I know who I think could potentially do terrible things and still think of themselves as being nice. They haven't learned that being a good person means personal cost sometime.

I've known a few who have married into money, and eventually became unrecognizable to their former selves.
That said, same can be said for those who lost everything.
