I’m defeated ☹️ trying to cook from scratch. I’m not a big planner. I’m a spontaneous person and it bites me sometimes. I was thinking about cooking my grandma’s chocolate cake for tomorrow. She used cake mix but back then they weren’t as toxic. I haven’t bought a box of cake mix in five years. I’ve been searching for hours for a yellow cake recipe. There’s so many different recipes it’s confusing. One says butter and sour cream, others say all purpose flour and cake flour. The scariest is the amount of eggs some recipes have. Not going there! My mom once cooked a birthday cake for my nephew and it was hard as a brick, 12 eggs! I’m giving up! Might cook homemade fudge or nothing. I’ll have to practice cake recipes when I’m not taking it for others to eat. I hope y’all are getting through with no difficulties.
I don’t bake much but I like the HillBilly Kitchen because she makes a lot of things simply and from scratch. I’m dying to try out the Irish Soda bread sometime on a cheat day. I just noticed she keeps things very basic but also she is budget conscious. She lists the ingredients in the info section of the video. I scrolled through and found a chocolate cake, not what you asked about but perhaps there is something you’re interested in. I know it’s YT but I like seeing the thing cooked. I also hate going to recipe sites and it’s all ads and a massively long page for one simple recipe.

I think I’ve watched that channel before. Many depression era foods are very simple and taste great.
There is a long circulating chocolate cake depression era recipe which happens to be vegan. It is easy peasy, very reliable, and requires no eggs. It appears in my edition in Joy of Cooking book as "Dairy Free Chocolate Cake". A quick search, here is a link below. Baking can require some finessing. Watching it carefully in the oven and rotating it once or twice, making sure not over bake is key. https://www.baltimorechefshop.com/recipes/2021/6/2/chocolate-depression-cake-vegan
Thanks I’ll check it out for another occasion. I love chocolate on chocolate cake. Texas sheet cake is so good. The following link is what my grandma cooked and I’ve cooked over thirty years. I was struggling with the yellow cake recipe. So many variations. The icing recipe on this link is very similar. We use cocoa instead of baking chocolate bar (same results). If you or anyone wants to make this icing don’t cook it when it’s raining or damp. Bring to slow boil and remove from stove. If not it’s a chocolate soup. https://www.thekitchn.com/family-recipe-boiled-chocolate-icing-recipes-from-the-kitchn-174777
Thank me later.

Ha ha I’ve eaten my share of factory icing. I got the icing recipe down. I can’t eat packaged food anymore. I’m allergic to soy and get a made itch. I made my favorite brownies today for my family get together. I didn’t taste the batter or cooked brownies. https://www.costcuisine.com/post/costco-ghirardelli-triple-chocolate-brownie-mix-review
I feel for you, nothing like a reliable tried and tested recipe. Hope whatever you decide to make turns out well.
Thanks, I’m a pretty good cook and I’ll figure out the cake when it’s not for a large crowd. Once I took homemade apple pie for Easter to in laws and I got in trouble. Said, I’d been hiding it from them🤣 Hope you have a great time also.
Hang in there! Make something that's your specialty or that you make well. Enjoy your family and don't stress. 🙏🎄💕
Thanks 😊 Chocolate cake is my specialty if I use a box. It’s hard cooked chocolate icing. I think it’s a depression era recipe. I don’t need it but kinda craving it. I’ll figure it out one day😆
I just get immersed when cooking, some of my happiest memories from my childhood are of cooking with Mama, Daddy, MawMaw and PawPaw. All of the men were as good OR Better than the women! I usually sing while cooking because of those are two of my loves...music and food! 😸. Thinking about your yummy Chocolate cake made me hungry for some!
