Unfortunately its a bit more complicated that simply quitting sugar.
We have to recognize that the highly processed foods that have been made available in the west are only one step away from being sugar themselves. Foods like white flour, white rice, vegetable oil, etc. are all poison to the body. The processed carbohydrates lack their antidote shell of fiber and core nutrients. Lacking the protective fiber, these carbs get processed instantaneously in the body to glucose. They would have eventually been turned into glucose with the fiber, but the point is that the eventual glucose dose in the body would be 10x less with the fiber removed due to the hyper concentration of the refined carbohydrates.
The key is, as you pointed out, home grow as much as possible. Or rather, eat as many whole unprocessed and unrefined foods as you can. The body was designed to break down complex whole foods, not to get a hit of super refined simple carbs that overload the body with glucose.
To link back to the topic of parasites, bacteria, and fungi, these three invasive organisms thrive on the excess glucose supply in the body, and also on a low acid stomach. The western diet generally decreases the body's acidity, leading to ailments like GERD and acid reflux which are then treated with proton pump inhibitors which further decrease stomach acidity, and introduce problems like malabsorption of key nutrients. This in turn causes most people to overeat and overconsume the foods that led to their condition in the first place.
When you begin to delve deep into the subject of nutrition and the food pyramid you begin to realize that the entire western diet was purposefully designed to keep us sick. Also want to add that these microbes pleiomorph, meaning they change their function and form in response to the environment.
