This is a standoff that they cannot afford to lose. And it has to be this. Last night, it was said that McCarthy caved and gave them everything they wanted. But he still didn’t get to 218. In fact, by the end of the night, McCarthy detractors had grown by 3 since the first 2 votes took place. Either the story was a larp released by the swamp to attempt yet another angle of attack on the “unreasonableness” of the holdouts, or the holdouts got what they wanted and are moving the goalposts. But which is it?

What is notably missing from the media tonight? Exactly what specifically was demanded and especially what the “compromise” was, if any. We are getting some idea from various direct rep tweets. But not concrete specifics.

It is the rules committee that is the line in the sand. It just has to be. If they do not control the rules committee, they are toast. It is the rules committee that will be wielded to thwart effective investigations and oversight. One of the BIG ones would be preventing conservatives from unsealing the J6 committee records. If McCarthy gives into this demand (a reasonable one at that…one that should already be a given not a demand) he and his merry band of apparatchiks are toast. And so are the democrats.

And this is the only thing that makes sense. It is the one thing the swamp simply cannot part with. It is also the one thing that they cannot publicly defend. There is no good faith argument against what the “not so fast, kev” crowd want. Not to the republican voter base. There is no reasonable argument to be made that this is unacceptable terms. So now what?

This is what we are watching. Someone has to blink.
