Last year I bought some green beans at the dollar store. The cans had new labels. When I was rotating my stock, I noticed that the new labeled cans had 1 year shorter expiration dates. Yep, they're shortening the expiration dates to increase profits from consumers who believe the dates on the cans to be absolute.
I always thought it funny people would think food was good the day before expiration, but bad the day of expiration. And that food processors could predict that exact date a year in advance. Canned food has an expiration date, but will last decades. Even bottled water has an expiration date. How can bottled water "expire"? Just another case of people doing what they're told rather than thinking for themselves.
An test was done see how long many drugs last past the expiration date, to save the govt. from buying frequently. The test showed many are good for 12 years or more, not just one for two.
If you use milk as the yardstick, the date is pretty spot on...drink it after the expiration date and it's a rotten pineapple pina colada...I think people apply that experience to other things because it's more pleasant to chuck something than to be stuck in the bathroom.

It's pretty simple.
That date is primarily for the grocers, not for the consumers.
They rely on this not being common knowledge so that we throw it out on their schedule, not ours.
I've tried to ell that to people, they never listen....

It always messes me up when the Qwife tosses out a block of cheese just because it has a little mold on it....
So I let one piece get covered in it, cut off the Mold and made me some sammiches, that I ate in front of her....
Me too...😋
yep and there's these modern inventions called "KNIVES" which can magically slice off moldy bits.
