They've taking all the prepping and gun shows off TV. I wonder why. We're building a house, almost complete. Have big plans for gardens to grow as much of our produce as possible. NC climate will allow us to grow something almost year round. I just got a NG powered whole house generator. Debating solar. Have a year of freeze dried food and may by my own freeze drier at some point. Canning as well. Buying my meat locally and getting chickens. Anyone else a prepper?
Good for you blacksmith!
We live in the house my grandfather built 90 years ago. It's so well built...ship lapped walls & ceilings...survived hurricanes & fire. Have a well but hubby says we need to go deeper, PawPaw used the well water for his garden. We stockpile everything, food, paper goods, all kinds of "hardware" IYKWIM, no chickens yet. SIL is a beekeeper. Have family who are ranchers so have local meat. We have Solar for hubby's HAM radios & outside lighting...would like to get more panels. Also have a NG whole house generator which makes my heart sing...got it 3 years ago after drooling over them for a decade! Enjoy your home...well done!
Sounds fantastic!
Thank you, Joy. We should be in late next mo early Feb. Just in time to start building the gardens.
Have fun...you must have an awesome feeling of accomplishment!
Not quite there yet. I still have a move in front of me, plus building gardens, shed, interior work, landscaping, landscape lighting, chicken coop, etc. I've done nothing more than write checks and haul building materials from point A to point B thus far. It will be a beautiful home when done. Where planting a small orchard and berry bushes. Will need a bunch of bird netting too.
oh yes, for awhile now, I am not as self reliant and never have been, regarding construction and wiring or plumbing, but I have common sense. Tools and carpentry are not anything I am good at, I store food, mine and purchased, buy bulk everything, and then buy some more, have a storage of first aid and medical aides, herbs, liquor for tincture or barter, 5 acres with enough wood for fuel for at least 2 winters, (hardwood), with enough young growth to be usable I am of the mindset of 50% disaster ready and 50% living self reliantly for 40 years (mindset).. I work, though I cannot like I used to, in a field that will always be needed, my son and his gf live with me, young strong people, they also are trained as caregivers, child care, some carpentry skills but I would not let him build a house, we live in a nice wide big windowed with live in basement that is prefab, 20 years old and needs touchups. Heat with wood and electric, but wood will do for heat and cooking. Solar would not be that great, its gloomy New England, but for 5 months out of the year there is no need for refrigeration, and 2 months of that for freezing. We live near running water that comes from a top of a mountain that only has wild animals living on it, clean of chemicals etc, usually more than adequete water natural water, I have a very deep artesian well and am saving for a genny that I can afford to run it , maybe just once a week and save the water Sparsely populated area, good relations with all neighbors, civil and cold with the ones adjacent though he did something weird last week, I was walking the dogs, one leashed and the Springer not, guy was cleaning off his car, the pup bounded across his property, stopped and sniffed, wagged and kept bouncing and running along, on the way back the dude had dumped one of those paper food containers for wings to go, just dumped all the bones right by his mailbox. Damn fool Springer of course snagged it up and would not come when called because he is an asshole like that. Anyway, I thought it was a hostile gesture.
It all sounds great..must feel good to know you are independent and can blow raspberries at the government...I wish I could
Yes. Recently got to test what I have stocked due to massive storms. My advice - have enough fuel for your generator to last 4 times longer than you think necessary AND, 10 times the wood you think you need for heat. Emergency radio and walkie talkies easily found.
Know your neighboring community - you each have Something unique.
NG for your genie, good on you!
You know what’s sad about this? When we went through Hurricane Ian, the power went out before the storm was even close to Tampa (tree branches hitting power lines) and some of my neighbors had their generators up and running within about 5 mins. Y’all not gonna survive if you can’t last 5 mins without electricity. It wasn’t especially hot or cold out, either. Save. The. Fuel.
Many people have auto turnover to generator, we do. The key is turning it off!
The genny is plumbed into natural gas, not propane. So as long as the gas keeps flowing, were good. I have HAM and GPRS comms. Will stock up on wood when the firepit is built, but no use inside the house. Also pellets. I generally store about 20 gallons of extra fuel. Also going to bury a chest freezer as a makeshift root cellar. I'm on a body of water, on a peninsula, so in theory, we could shut down access to about 500 homes if needed. Debating solar with powerwall.
Not solar..vapour canopy comes..won't be any sun
I haz penty of sun.
Prepper, no. Prepared, kinda. I could survive without a grocery store (or ANY store). I'm lucky enough to be rural enough we all take care of each other. We all have our skills and we are all good and decent people that look out for each other.
