I do not need Wi-Fi tools. I’m need tools that plug in and work. How hard would it be to disable this crap? Not very hard. If you understand how electric motors work. Besides battery power tools suck for the most part.
I used to think battery powered tools sucked. But I've been flat out abusing a Milwaukee 3/8 impact gun with the same battery all day every day for 2 and a half years now.no signs of giving up yet.
We also have the Milwaukee 1" drive impact. That thing will take off lugs that the air gun can't turn or it'll break your wrist.
I don't want new power tools. I have a few old ones, but I can duplicate their functions with hand tools. And I have multiples of those. I can use an egg beater style drill all day long without a battery going dead. With proper bits and technique, I can drill a hole quickly. The manual drill is a lot lighter than a battery or electric drill.
I won't be buying any of those tools that have to be "unlocked." Ever.
The unlocking technology to unlock a validly purchased power tool I have no problem with. What I do have a problem with is the following:
“They say that these publicly-accessible records “can be used by retailers, manufacturers, and law enforcement to validate authentic purchases.”
If the tool was purchased then it was unlocked. Why in the hell would retailers, manufacturers, and law enforcement need information on an unlocked tool? If the tool is unlocked, then the assumption should be that it was purchased.
The electronic tags they put on the product is scanned and 'validates' the item as sold along with your card ID if used.
Then the cameras stationed everywhere record your purchase and the ones in the lot record your car as your phone tracks your every move.
If the tag wasn't scanned, the sensor at the door would 'beep' if installed as many did. The security guard would come detain you and/or call the police if determined necessary.

Oh I use snap on for my business and they are fantastic. Tech has came a long way, but I dang sure don’t need Wi-Fi chips and crap in my power tools.
Except for my old Craftsman driver, I agree.

Our best tools came from swap meets and pawn shops....I spose those will be outlawed too eh
Just use the tools on the shoplifters.
...as long as they are not stolen...
...for now...
...doggy winks....
I will have to fix the old ones. I do already.
Give it time
...exactly....

You are correct.

So yeah, it's all about anti-theft security. ;)
