Yes. I am so old i remember 17 cents a gallon. Two dollars in my 55 Chev. lasted all week.
Oh yea I remember. They were called "Service stations" back then.
I remember being the guy to do all of that. Yup!
Me too! It was a smelly job but taught me a good attitude could get a good tip. But with some customers, you could never get the windows right. A streak here, a streak there, what's the big deal? That's what I was muttering to myself.
27 cents a gallon and I couldn't afford a car! Them's the good old days.
Could you afford rent/utilities for a home that was bigger than a modern "pod" on those wages?
Well No. But I was single an only wanted a roof over my head and shower access. Hot water was considered a big plus. I think the pay was $1.18/hr. I'd work a job a few months an coast as long as the money lasted.
I was just talking to my boyfriend about that the other day. At first I was talking about how some gas stations don’t even have air pumps anymore. Then I said some of the ones that do, they’re often broken. Then I talked about how it’s often $1.25 for the air when it should be free (There were some Sheetz stations that had free air that I noticed last year, which was nice. ). Then we got to the part where I said exactly what that meme said. I was pretty young when it was like that, but not so young that I don’t remember. I remember my father always getting out and having a good chat with the service guy too.
In my youth I worked at a 7-11 with gas. Remember checking the price of gas down the street so we could be competitive, and using a giant dip stick to check the underground tank. It was cool.
There’s a lot of us here who have been in this war since 11/22/63.
You do. Now go mow the yard like I told you.
Omg You guys are older than my grandparents!
Get over it sonny.
Yep! Just another example of the good ‘ol days. Before the electronic age destroyed them.
That ended around the early 70s. I remember pumping my own gas in 1975.
I also remember in the early 60s when gas was 10 cents a gallon in our town. The local stations were having a 'gas war'. Mom and Dad were happy about that, but it didn't last more than a week or two.
23.9 ....and gas wars as cheap as 17.9
And green stamps !
.,the only things they check now is to see if your vaccinated,.or not,..or if you have enough money to pay for the gas,.before its pumped,..!..
and not for a surcharge.... Remember when people dressed nicely to travel? Remember when the customer was always right? Not toxically masculine?
You can't pump your own gas in NJ, but they no longer check your fluids/tires. The just pump and get paid and you are still expected to tip.
I'm not a fellow; but YES.
Remember when 10c per gallon could pay for an employee to do that?
