I like another Russell quote: "The problem with the world is the the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt."
from The Second Coming by W.B. Yeats
This is scientifically documented. For those who aren't yet aware of it:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect
It basically describes how in fields of expertise, some people with a little knowledge and skill are often overconfident far beyond their very limited knowledge. On the other hand, people with significant knowledge and skill tend to be overly cautious. It can be simplified to:
The dumb are too stupid to realise they know almost nothing
The smart are wise enough to realise there is much they do not know
There are a lot of lessons that can be taken from this:
Just because some one claims to be knowledgeable on a topic, doesn't mean they are. In fact, over-confidence can sometimes be a sign of a lack of knowledge.
Over-confidence based in ignorance will keep someone ignorant. Anyone who thinks they already know everything or know enough will not be open to learning more.
Knowledgeable people can often be overly cautious. Sometimes, they need to put their doubts aside and take the risk otherwise they can end up being overtaken by people with false confidence who are willing to take the risk because they don't realise they are taking a risk. No knowledge will ever be complete and sometimes the perfect moment to act may be now, instead of some future more perfect moment that may never materialise.
Indeed! This says exactly what occurs between my sister and I. I explain/tell her something and she hears something totally different…and she calls me a dummy. This is going on my fridge. Kek.
Yep. Same with my brother. He thinks I’m insane for thinking that there are stand-ins for the US president “Biden”. He won’t grasp that fact that it’s even remotely possible.
I don't know who said this, and also where I read it, but I use it a lot. When people tend not to get something I said or that appears to be obvious to most people:
"Your mind is like concrete, thoroughly mixed and permanently set."
Great quote. A shame he was so wrong about what really mattered.
This explains some of my conversations with some friends. It’s not just that they try to digest what you’re saying and then reword it into simpler terms.
They instead translate what you say, as they hear it, and turn it into a combination of what they can understand and what they want to hear, subconsciously.
Then the man just isn't clever. that quote: "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself."
A lot of liberals are not stupid at all, they are the victims of a delusion that has been played on them.
They do not have a sense of values, they have sets of values, these sets are very tenacious but when they are replaced for another set by whatever means it happens instantaneously. "Oh, now I get it!" The eureka moment.
As for RP'ing these people, I just don't know how. It seems the smarter they are the more resistance they put up to any other mind set.
I pray for them and know this works, may you do the same for those you know.
The "don't say gay bill" in Florida. Thier name for it says it all.
This is why I don't socialize with people very much. Most of them are like that.
Even people with normally high IQs can be stupid and sometimes you won't find out until it's too late.
