hard to do when they just take it.....was at the accountant the other day...it is still amazing why these people that never paid a dime get a refund of 10g or better....just pisses ya off......everyone just needs to take a few unpaid days off they wont get that.....
Taking days off hits the employer, not the government.
No, better, if you want to apply pressure, is to file a new W4 and increase the number of "expected" deductions. (Item 4(b)) Yes, you will pay a financial penalty if you "guess" wrong and don't let them withhold at least 90%, but the penalty is small compared to the benefit. If everyone did this, just cut their withholdings in half, the pressure would increase.
Remember: only actual fraud (e.g. filing a false return, making a mistake in excess of 25% of your income, etc) is a crime. Admitting to the amount, but not paying or simply delaying payment is only a financial penalty. It's time we all stopped being afraid of these nazis. If they have their way, we won't have anything left for them to seize anyway.
I filed last year, and owed $23k (Federal). I sent $100. The next month they sent a bill and I paid another $100. Third month, same thing. Then no more bills or any type of notification since last summer. A friend of mine has had the same situation.
I figured if we have to end up paying to IRS then I’ll have to pay, along with interest. But if the IRS is going away then I would be kicking myself for paying just beforehand.
So serious question. Last few years have gotten some $ back from filing, not saying that is a good thing. This year I owe another few $ grand but have not filed. Are you all filing or not? I am scared of their long reach, I hate taxes, the IRS, etc but in quandary as to what to do. What are you all doing? Recommendations?
Easiest thing to do now is to file an extension, estimating that you will owe no taxes. I think that gives you until August. We should know more by then.
Yes will extend. My Turbotax says I need to pay what I owe even tho I extend my filing to avoid penalties. You’re saying when filing the extension say estimate owed is $0
I'm not a tax professional and this isn't tax advice. It's just what I'd do. I'd rather estimate zero taxes and have to pay a penalty later on the chance our tax system will be in a whole different place come August. That's not for everybody, especially if you owe a lot of taxes.
List the federal reserve as a dependent and claim no tax needs to be paid, but you are waiting on a refund? You would not be lying.
Ian, you are on to something big!

Going through all the tax conversations here and came across your comment. I’m curious if you still haven’t heard anything?
I had to end up paying state, but haven't heard a peep from IRS yet.
Thank you for the quick follow up.
I might just try your approach. State of Florida here; no state taxes.
