Plus Seal beach (directly adjacent to Long Beach) has a naval research facility and they often have multiple ships in the area.

There are ALWAYS military ships parked off the coast in this area.
San Diego is a military city. Coronado beach, and other training grounds.
I have noticed an uptick in helicopter activity here in L.A. I didn't go by the coast today, but yesterday saw a few cargo ships waiting, looking normal. I'm not close to the port, but I see cargo ships in my area when they're backed up.
