The character is fiction. The era is not. I have family who lived through it, some of which are still alive. The stories are gut wrenching. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it didn't happen.
What were the stories that were gut wrenching? Anything worse really than what goes on now? Segregated drinking fountains weren't exactly the Soviet gulags. Southern hospitality was well known even then. The little secret here is that white Southerners were able to enforce white supremacy by generally being polite to blacks in interpersonal interactions.
Do you live in the South? Did you grow up in the South? Have you looked into the history of the South from 1865 all the way up until the early to mid eighties? Did you know that up until the 1980's country clubs could have policies that stated no blacks or jews could be members? Mar a Lago was the first country club to allow blacks and jews. And yes, this was Donald Trumps that was the first in his area around Mar a Lago to allow blacks and jews to be members. The Jim Crow Laws were fact. Segregation, discrimination, unequal treatment under the law, etc. Etc. How could you not know about this?
Fun fact - Jim Crow is a fictional character. "Jim Crow era" is fiction.

Today, we have black-only clubs, such as the Congressional Black Caucus where only blacks are allowed.
Sometimes, people would rather associate with their own people. Freedom of association and all that.
