I priced used solar too. For a few thousand I can power my house forever if I could just find an electrician to hook me up to the grid. I wonder if that is why the took all the vocational (trades) classes out of the schools.
As soon as you move to using batteries to capture power you create a very real off-gassing issue (depending upon the type of batteries you use) and a very real nonzero chance of potentially explosive fire. So be careful please, and ideally set up your batteries in a separate structure away from your garage/shop/home.
P.S. The "If I drill a hole" idea has a lot of merit, actually. Ground loop systems can pump hot air down deep into the ground and then what comes back out is cool air. Or if it's below ~65F, the same system will heat a structure. And often this project can piggyback on your "I'm going to dig a well" project. The problem with digging straight down is that it is expensive to do so.
