My grandfather was one of the band of brothers that landed on the beach, fought in battle of the bulge, and ultimately Bastogne.
He and my grandmother were pretty poor, but he was invited to some parade commemorating the liberation of France. They went. The French citizens spat at him. He literally teared up over it and he wasn’t one to do that. At this point he was in his 70’s.
Any time we went to stay at my grandparents as kids we were warned that he still had nightmares and would do shit in his sleep. He’d wake up screaming the rest of his life.
Now we are all sitting around praying that there are unknown ‘white hats’ doing things to save America.

Went there on 70th year of D-day landings and flags of all allies were flying, French children on field trip at Pointe Du Hoc. It was unforgettable. The French in Normandy have not forgotten.
