We used to bring our guns to school, keep them in our cars, and after the day ended we would go shooting with the shop teacher who also brought his guns to school. Today we would have all been arrested and the teacher arrested for grooming domestic terrorists. Better times!

Some schools had ROTC rifle teams in the high schools, and some high schools had indoor .22LR ranges, where the students could go with an adult and PRACTICE shooting at targets, before, during and after school.
Some students who took this skill seriously, purchased upgraded rifles, to compete against other students, and other schools. My college room-mate was an alternate for the 1984 Olympics

That's a fact. Every truck in the parking lot when I went to HS had a gun rack with a loaded rifle and/or a loaded shotgun. Never one issue.

Driver's Ed teacher would have us stop the car so he could shoot at squirrels. I remember thinking he was quirky, but never dangerous.

I took a .22 to English class and showed how to clean it,to do a demonstrative speech.
