Up to a certain stage in the Great Awakening, all the q people were using Qanon to identify each other, connect up and post stuff, etc. Only later did the media attacks gain traction, using "qanon" and basically hijacked the term and distorted it.
Also, black hat activists infiltrated the movement to some extent, and introduced fake false narratives (Austin Steinbart, etc) to discredit Q and anons.
Also, some anons promoted wrong or wacky ideas that were not actually Q, and that became something the DS propaganda arm latched on to.
This created a situation when Q had to draw the clear distinction between Q and anons, pointing out that there is no such entity as "qanon" (2020). But in the early days (e.g 2018) we used that expression quite a lot, although not everyone sees it the same way.
I would track that back to it being an old meme brought out of retirement. Seems like that to me. Also, back in the early days (2018) there was a lot more variation and less standardization of Qisms, etc. Possibly, also, of European anon origin, but maybe Op could shed light on that.
