You cant hide from the neighbor you were once friendly with that wants to steal the food you stockpiled to feed his starving kids and will do anything to get it. If things do go full or even half MadMax then peoples baser instincts take over. Survival outweighs any moral considerations when you are hungry. The strong will strip the weak of anything of value. History shows this to be immutable fact.

Arm yourself if you want a chance of coming out the other side.
