Disney and Microsoft both have a history of buying anything that looks like competition so it can't be. How many other studios/publishers/media related businesses have they bought, or had bought at that time? That's the gauge for just how important the production company is in their grand scheme of media monopoly.
In this case, Disney bought 20th Century FOX and they acquired the rights to this film.
20th Century Fox is a big name--would Disney buy them just to stifle one film? How much more did that one acquisition (TCF) affect?
I never claimed that's why Disney bought them.
In fact, it's easy to see it was in an effort to promote Disney+ by acquiring a massive catalogue of TV shows and movies.
That's my take too, just the usual IP grab, but it seems that some people think Disney targeted the film.
