I think it would be a mistake to cede land invaded by Putin, regardless of what bad deeds Ukraine has been up to. It would be like Canada invading Illinois, to stop the "bad things" happening there, and then giving them Illinois if the "war" ends. Just because Ukraine's government is corrupt and is involved with corrupt things, does not give another country a right to take part of it.
What if it was Maine rather than Illinois and most of the people in Maine had Canadian heritage and had voted to secede from the Union - because the US government had been shelling them for 8 years - and join Canada?
I haven't heard of the Ukraine government shelling part of Ukraine. But that argument, regarding heritage, could be used to justify a wide swath of Texas being taken back by Mexico.
After the 2014 US-led coup, the NAZI elements in Ukraine wanted to drive out the impure ones, the Russians, from Donbas. They killed around 14,000 people in the 8 year period prior to the Russian intervention. Some say that Ukraine was building up to a final push where they would enter Donbas in force and go for genocide. Putin pre-empted that possibility.
Here is one such report but you will be able to find many more if you look.

Here is a video I saved some time ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-M33UUZCSSs
Ok, thank you. But the thing is, Stalin committed genocide and then moved Russians in, correct? We're not dealing with saints on either side.
I don't know that losing Illinois to Canada is such a bad thing.... :)
:) But, like most U.S. states, probably at least half are decent people, despite what the voting percentages may suggest.
