One of my neices who is unfortunately very strong opinioned when it comes to her leftism (thanks U of M) who thinks racism is one of the biggest problems in America thought that George Washington freed the slaves.
It is insane that you can know so little about something yet have such strong solidified opinions on that something.
It's not insane, it's usually how it works.
The less you know, the more you think you know. Been like that since ancient times.
I don't believe that's true. Maybe in "ancient times" it was, but nowadays we have very well educated people who are well versed and well educated in their field, as well as many other fields even, or even Jack of All Trades types who know a lot of information, who think they know better than everyone else on everything.
They may have more knowledge of 99% of things than you or I, but the problem is the representation and framing of that knowledge.
Because they know so many correct things, they believe that gives them the intellectual high ground in everything else too.
At this point, people are conditioned into lacking humility, with a false sense of empathy with the scales weighted towards everyone else that they agree with.
Then, when people contradict their statements or beliefs, it doesn't matter how much knowledge about any or all subjects either side knows, it is an affront to their intelligence and they cannot abide that, they cannot admit they are wrong, they cannot see any other point of view, they cannot step into another person's shoes that disagrees with them.
At the end of his life, George Washington made the decision to free all of the enslaved people he owned in his 1799 will.
So... technically George Washington DID free the slaves, but only the ones he owned at the time.
