Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Just got stung twice by wasps. The good news is it’s not swelling which means unlike my siblings I might not have an allergy to wasp venom.🤩
It aches a little but I don’t feel like I have to scratch it. Thanks God!🙏🏻
I was told that nicotine, like from a cigarette, will ease the pain of a sting. I’m not a smoker and have not tried this. I was at the local tennis courts a few months ago and my young son was stung on his finger. A fellow player, also a nurse, had mentioned to find a cigarette , but (thankfully) no one there smoked. But a bunch of other people there agreed that it works. Luckily my son was fine.
When we were living in Tempe, Arizona, we used to get lots of wasps, especially when we would be in our pool. It turns out there was a huge wasps nest in a bush two neighbors down from us. It was a little old lady that lived there, and we found out there was a nest at her place. I knew exactly what to do. My best friend who was my roommate at the time was deathly afraid of bees.
I put on some leather gloves and I got a huge black trash bag. I went over to the bush and I took the black trash bag and I whipped it over the nest and closed it up tight. Everybody looked at me like I was crazy lol. It was a day of success and victory for me.
Never had a problem with those wasps after that! I got them all in one fell swoop!
Bummer!
I’m not afraid of bees, and for some reason they’re not afraid of me.
I have many weird stories about bees in my life, but I’m not gonna get into it. Anyway… I got to get busy busy as a bee. 🤣😂
not afraid of bees either & have never been stung- think they understand;)
mosquitoes were another story until I had a brain injury, now they leave me alone- think it has something to do with lack of stress hormones- i'm comfy now🐸
Yellow jacket flew up my shorts last summer while I was driving and got me once on the outside of my thigh. Sharp pinch initially, then for the rest of the day it felt like I'd been punched. Took a while to heal.
I shudder to think of the outcome had it flown up the inside of my pant leg rather than the outside. Those things will sting you over and over if they get the chance...
So I have bees and wasps around me a LOT where I'm at, but I haven't been stung since I was a little kid.
When I was a little kid I remember it being horrible and traumatic. Is it that way as an adult? I often wonder if it's the kind of thing that was worse because I was only a child, and everything is kind of overblown at that age.
I'll hang up and listen.
Edit: Thanks for the feedback. Kind of ironic we got a beekeeper and someone who's allergic to check in. 😃♥️
I haven't been stung by a wasp that I can remember...however, I get stung by bees almost every time I open my hives. Initially, the stings would be really awful and swell, itch, and hurt for days. Now, though, after three years (or four, I can't remember), I rarely swell unless I get stung on my face (I swear the jerks seek me out in the yard for a couple of days after I inspect), it only hurts for a few minutes, but it does itch for a few days. It's not fun, but it's no longer horrible exactly....
Due to repeated incidents with nests over the years, I am now highly allergic. Most recent incident with yellowjacket wasps resulted in 3 inch round welts that stayed for months, burning and itching like a son of a gun. I have benedryl on hand, but thinking it may behoove me to grab a sting kit from the doc at this point. Not fun.
