Kind of been wondering about this, the Burning Man event seems to attract a lot of leftists, but attracts my interest as it seems to also attract artists and artistic expression, maybe a kind of environmentalism, I don't know. Their main celebration seems to have been a repackaging of the pagan event of burning a wicker man, they burn a big effigy to end the event.
It's kind of ambiguous about being pagan or nonreligious or whatever but I think there are probably plenty of objectionable things that take place that "conservatives" or "Christians" might want to steer clear of. But, I think possibly there are good things that might be adapted in to some alternative new event or incorporated in to existing events.
Any idea about "Christian conservative" alternatives to Burning Man?
Burning Man is no different than any hippie-fest from back in the day. Just add the designer drugs we have now and weed dozens of times more potent than Nam era pot. And add numerous human trafficking risks. My cousin has gone to Burning Man every year for as long as it has existed. I never wanted to go. I quit drinking and smoking and I can't imagine enjoying a festival where everyone else is wasted and I'm stuck on the straight and narrow path. Even though it was my choice to stop, I miss my crutches a lot sometimes. Jesus gives me my strength.
So true. Its nothing more than "get off your face, catch some STD's and tell yourself you are free"
They have their own airport ffs, its a very corporate affair
It's cringe when Christendom apes the world. Sorry.
The Church has a long history of Christianizing non-Christian things however
I guess the great commission of going out, preaching the Gospel and making disciples is not enough these days.
Hopefully the Lord Jesus Christ is enough.
perhaps not much is needed to satisfy a Christian, truly
although there have been Christian feasts and festivals throughout history I think
no, not much is needed. The Bible talks about being content with what we already have. Reading that part helps sets the believer at ease with what they've already been given.
Jesus wants us to know Him who died for us, which thousands of lifetimes spent in seeking to know Him more would barely be able to scratch the surface of beginning to know who He is.
Conferences are big gatherings consisting of worship, instruction, edification, and networking. Some are general purpose, and some target a specific audience.
I seem to recall the Russian Orthodox Church either sponsors or is at the very least affiliated with a festival where they burn an effigy of the Tower of Babel.
But that’s the only one I’m aware of off hand.
That's interesting, I guess I've seen the effigy may have been "appropriated" or used (appropriately) in some "Christian" contexts; there have definitely been certain feasts or communal Christian festivals and gatherings that wouldn't need to devolve into quasi-neo-pagan excess as at Burning Man
Yeah I guess there are some novus ordo or these "trad" group events, theologically I just don't think they go far enough against Vatican 2 so it feels awkward to try to participate... but they're also not as far removed from being Catholic in my view
While it is not by any means particularly conservative or Christian, PorcFest in New Hampshire is a libertarian festival where you're bound to find everyone of every type that values small government. There's a great Christian tent every year that holds plenty of events. On the other hand there's new age types, atheists, nudists (limited to their own areas). Plenty of people using psychedelics and treating it like their own personal Burning Man. It's all relative. My psychedelic experience left me wanting to run over to the New Age tent and start trying to convince them about Jesus and biblical Christianity. Long story short, it's a very good substitute if you're anywhere near New England. Won't be until next June though.
I think given other comments I've seen, that maybe a lot of these events might be able to have Christian subgroups within them, and that maybe expecting one big event that's Christian might be a big more to hope for than is necessary
Porcfest has been on a "maybe someday" list for me...
