His biggest mistake was live tweeting the fact that he was skipping town and fleeing to Hungary.
His tweets blew up and started to get a lot of attention, so in effect he was pretty much telling anyone who was watching (including Ukrainian authorities) what he was doing and where he was going.
All Ukrainian border guards had to do was simply wait for his expected arrival. I'm sorry man, but that was a VERY stupid move on his part.
Note to everyone reading this... if you ever have to escape or flee a situation, you should probably think twice about live tweeting the whole thing, including when you left and where you are going.
That thought definitely crossed my mind yesterday when I saw his tweets and Facebook posts.
My theory is that he was pretty sure he would be stopped at the border and returned to the fascists but there was a tiny chance that because they had returned his passports etc they wanted rid of him. I think that the communications were more to his family and friends rather than the wider public because he knew deep down that this was probably his one and only chance to let them know what was going on.
Agreed. He should've lied about his location or hunkered down somewhere for a few days before crossing.
I imagine he wanted to keep his bike, but personally I would've made the journey on foot away from major roadways. Lira mentioned motion detectors & cameras, but I just don't see those being utilized on the entire length of the border....
It's interesting to note that Scott and Douglas McGregor's views of Gonzalo are diametrically opposed, which is very unusual.
At the moment, I'm very much on the fence. Having said that, if Gonzalo is an SBU agent and grifter then how come he's been totally dark since he uploaded onto social media just short of the border?
Well if he would stop broadcasting his movements , he may have had a chance of getting out alive. Also - he should have left months, if not a year ago.
Do you mean this entire time or just this week's video?
I'll take a stab at both.... What is making $150,000+ in patreon & YouTube bits while gaining notoriety to help fuel his future writing endeavors?
I support & admire Lira for his efforts, but let no one be disillusioned that his journalism was motivated by the self. He could've left before the conflict started with his family. Lira banking on the war being over quickly or not effecting him personally was a very risky gamble made out of greed. It had dick-all to do with "the sake of journalism"... That's just what his reasoning devolved to after a year+ of being stuck in a conflict zone.
In his latest videos this week, he outright mentions $147,000 SBU found in his paypal, purely his YouTube & patreon gains. This is what they extorted from him.
Makes sense his paypal would be so flush. You'll have a hard time using paypal for stuff in E.Europe... Let alone in Ukraine.
Again, I both enjoy his content and agree with Lira a litany of issues. But he stayed in Karkhov because he wanted to, and that want was most likely career/greed driven. IMO once the war was over, he would rake in oodles from online persona & journalism pay and then retire on the book sales revenue. After all, this would've made for his second successfully selling book...
I didn't intend for anyone to go there for wrong thinkining. I'm talking about actual criminals. They need to fear incarceration. Fear is what is missing with career criminals. Most don't have jobs or homes to loose, so a cushy jail term for assaulting someone's grandma for her purse or raping your daughter for their deviant sexual desires, is nothing but a vacation from the hood for these scum. Put them in labor camps or on chain gangs cleaning up our country.
A US citizen, living in Ukraine, reporting/speaking out against the Ukrainian regime as a streamer (youtube/rumble?) and is now being arrested and tortured for it.
He says the regime released him on bail w his passport. And a friend told him if they give you your passport they want you to leave the country, otherwise they take it away
I'm pretty sure that if you are in Ukraine occupied territory NOTHING else matters other that what the UkroNazis say.
Not the rule of law, natural justice, what other countries think (including their sponsors), human rights, freedom of speech/expression. FUCK ALL
I think that his friends had a very good point though - giving him back his passports etc just didn't make sense. Sadly, it looks as though they, and he, were mistaken.
Supposedly, this is how it works in corrupt countries. They still read you your rights and everything, they just dont actually get you a lawyer or stop beating you, etc. When they want you to get out of Dodge they say "dont leave" as per the law, but they give you your passport so you can.
I've never been to ukraine so i cant say. But i guess this guy's life was already hell at this point so he bolted. Maybe the people who told him that's how it works were not good friends of his, after all
It's the Euro police version of subtly. Even Lira didn't pick up on it because he had never dealt with police in Europe and also, his Ukrainian language skills are terrible.
Additionally, a friend did not tell him. Other inmates in prison did a few weeks ago. Above anon is referencing the fact that last year after being detained they gave him his documents back. The inmates he was housed with recently explained to Lira "you fool! They wanted you to leave..."
So fast forward to this week, when released again and they were supposed to hold his documents and not leave... They give him his documents and he bolted this time. He was facing upwards 10 yrs in a labor camp for speech crimes against the Ukrainian govt... Of which you can be assured Lira would be found guilty. Essentially a death sentence.

In that case, I would wait until I was 5 minutes from the border, tweet my ass off and lay it all down on X, and then attempt to cross.
There would be no way the Ukrainian officials would see those tweets in time and be able to set up a net to catch him.

And the freedom-loving, democratic, two-faced US State Department COULDN'T GIVE TWO FUCKS (Gonzalo is a US passport holder btw).
Hey fren, that link is from 2022. Here is his latest tweet https://twitter.com/GonzaloLira1968/status/1686140558803140608

Thanks fren - wrong link, just updated it with the correct one.
Just come across this on Twitter from Scott Ritter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeKguqxD9dY
Thanks, watched that yesterday.

https://rumble.com/v34o3m5-gonzalo-lira-why-i-stand-with-scott-ritter-and-eva-bartlett-new-circumstant.html This was from Scott Ritters Twitter also, just about to watch it. I'm the same as u, on the fence, but warning flags are up, so see how it all plays out.
Have a great weekend fren! ;)
and you fren.
Whichever way you look at it, the Gonzalo situation is very weird.
In hindsight, I don't think he should have uploaded anything to social media until he was safely away from Nazi occupied territory.
Well if he would stop broadcasting his movements , he may have had a chance of getting out alive. Also - he should have left months, if not a year ago.
Never understood why he ever showed his face or provided his voice and name.
Do not present a target.

I have no trouble agreeing with all of this. Updoot.
Didn't realize he was making so much money from this, but also somehow not surprised. Clown World.

What a dumbass.
Never tell your enemy about your movements, finances, etc.
FREE GONZALO
#speechcrimesarenotcrimes
We need labor camps here. No more cushy😉jails with cable and internet.
No thank you! My family was sent to labor camps for wrong think during Soviet occupation.

Who?
A US citizen, living in Ukraine, reporting/speaking out against the Ukrainian regime as a streamer (youtube/rumble?) and is now being arrested and tortured for it.
didn't the US issue an evacuation order for all non essential US citizens?
weird
Gonzalo was on bail and his bail conditions stipulated that he could not leave Ukraine or even Kharkov.
what is he trying to do right now? leave Ukraine, correct?
He says the regime released him on bail w his passport. And a friend told him if they give you your passport they want you to leave the country, otherwise they take it away
that doesn't make sense. his friends words are stronger than Ukrainian law, which is weaker than an American evacuation order?
am I missing something or is that what you guys are saying?
