According to Wiki a full payload leaves the C17 range at approx 2,420 nautical miles.
For example, the trip from Rome to New York is 3730 nautical miles.
1,310 nautical miles short.
For simplicity let's assume a C17 flew with a 50% of its total payload capacity, to enable a direct flight from Rome to New York.
That's still approx. 25,000 tons of GOLD, currently the US is the largest holder of GOLD based on various websites, so add in the 8K and you get approx. 33,000 tons.

C-5 Galaxy is still much larger than the C-17, and can hold much more, about 180,000 pounds....

My gut feeling is the C17 is that bit more nimble and there are more built and probably in operation than the C5, but I used it purely as back of a napkin means to work out the potential haul and what it might imply.
