OCTOBER 27, 2023 States Sue Meta to Protect Their Children Attorneys general from 33 states sue Facebookās parent company for addicting children to its products and misleading the public about the potential harm.
BRIAN MARK WEBER MORE BY THIS AUTHOR When social media companies like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter burst onto the scene, they found an enthusiastic audience among people of all ages.
At the time, it all seemed so harmless. Keeping in touch with friends, sharing travel pictures, and engaging in discussions on a range of topics made us feel connected to others.
Years ago, though, we began to sense that something wasnāt right, especially with our kids. We didnāt have the evidence to back up our gut feeling, but we didnāt like seeing them spending every waking moment on a phone or computer. Then, during COVID, the teachers unions locked our kids out of school, and their mental health began to suffer right before our eyes.
Now weāre beginning to see some hard evidence about the negative effects of social media on our young people, and thereās no way to sugarcoat it: Children are suffering because of social media ā socially, emotionally, and mentally.
Earlier this year, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy stressed that adolescents arenāt ready for social media platforms, and that theyāre harmful to their relationships and self-perception. Murthy also issued an advisory in May, citing a link between social media and mental health among young people. āIām issuing this advisory,ā he said, ābecause weāre in the middle of a youth mental health crisis, and Iām concerned that social media is contributing to the harms that kids are experiencing.ā
In addition, a study by the Journal of the American Medical Association found that social media has a profoundly negative impact on brain development in young people.
With mounting evidence, some states have seen enough, and theyāre fighting for our children.
āDozens of U.S. states filed a lawsuit against Meta and its Instagram social media platform on Tuesday, accusing the multinational technology conglomerate of contributing to the mental health crisis in American youth by making them addicted to its products,ā The Daily Wire reports. āAttorneys general from 33 states, including California and New York, filed the complaint in the Northern District of California federal court, claiming Meta violated federal childrenās online privacy and state consumer protection laws.ā
In part, the lawsuit claims that Meta āhas profoundly altered the psychological and social realities of a generation of young Americans.ā Moreover, āMeta has harnessed powerful and unprecedented technologies to entice, engage, and ultimately ensnare youth and teens,ā and āin seeking to maximize its financial gains, Meta has repeatedly misled the public about the substantial dangers of its Social Media Platforms. It has concealed the ways in which these Platforms exploit and manipulate its most vulnerable consumers: teenagers and children.ā
The states, though, arenāt the only ones going after Mark Zuckerbergās Big Tech behemoth.
According to National Review: āA Meta whistleblower released documents in 2021 that provided evidence that the company knew Instagram to be addictive and harmful to youth mental health. Since then, the media company has faced many lawsuits filed by school districts and states. Hundreds of school districts are currently suing Meta over concerns that the platforms encourage cyberbullying and distract students.ā
Instead of taking responsibility, social media giants such as Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, and others are hoping theyāll be protected by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which was passed by Congress back in 1996, before the Internet had so fully insinuated itself into our lives. The law protects Internet service providers, streaming services, and social media sites from holding any responsibility for third-party content created by their users. Despite efforts by the Justice Department during the Trump administration, little has changed. But school districts are working hard to make their case in court.
āIn the new lawsuits,ā reports The Wall Street Journal, āschool districts and families contend that the social-media companies have created an addictive product that pushes destructive content to youth ā and that a product, unlike content, doesnāt enjoy Section 230 protections.ā
States taking action include Arkansas and Utah, where children under 13 are banned from accessing social media, while teens under 18 who want to access certain sites need parental approval. Meanwhile, California ā the home of Hollywood, Silicon Valley, and one-party Democrat rule ā passed an Age-Appropriate Design Code to further restrict teens from accessing Meta platforms.
Now that parents, schools, and communities have irrefutable evidence that social media platforms and algorithms are harming our children, itāll be interesting to see how this battle to protect our kids progresses through the courts. There are measures we can take in the meantime, however ā and parents waking up to the dark reality of Meta is an important first step.
This is huge IMHO. The damage social platforms have done to kids is beyond measure. It's time for kids to get out of the house and away from their smart phones. It's time for kids to be children again and learn how to socialize and play outdoors.
Also Apple and Google for failing to take action against predatory apps along with deceptive and disturbing advertising.
Just playin' devils advocate here: Who buys the Phones, Pads, Consoles, and Computers for their kids because it "keeps them busy" and "out of trouble"?
I was about to say the same thing. Where are the PARENTS??????
It's a valid point..... Yet, Meta knew of the problems and didn't do anything, despite their meager statements of doing so, to do anything about it. Can we compare this is viewer ratings of movie content? Meta and others did nothing when they themselves knew of the psychological harm being done. What's the difference between a drug pusher and Meta?
Ironic that shitting on Zuckerberg and Co. Could bring Conservative and Liberal States together at least in this instance.
Fun fact: The tech/gaming sector is one of the biggest employer of Psychologists and graduates with Psych degrees almost beating out the medical industry.

Exactly āļøā¦ So to take a break from it all I just watched Mars Attacks for the first time in twenty years. The Illuminati symbolism was over the top. We See You!
Some parallels with Big Tobacco lawsuits of 1990s-2000s. Still no excuse for not raising kids right.
Bingo. Its lazy/shitty parenting.
The problem with copying an article wholesale is that you open the board to copyright lawsuits.

This is the worst for all children. It is so sad when I often hear terrible stories about kids being harassed by others using social media. This needs to be shut down. It's definitely causing harm and they do not feel safe, just left confused and angry. It is so hard to imagine how evil is coming in from all directions with just a phone. I pray for these kids.
So soon, all those kids will have nowhere to visit online except GAW!
Many were slow to recognize it but it was completely predictable that this would happen anD it was already a thing way before covid. Covid if anything brought it all to light, people had 24 hours a day to dial in as the cabal tried to keep the world starved of truth. If anything, we should be glad we had these stupid devices because it helped expose all of this.
100 percent, a weapon designed for the very thing being complained about. Predictable is preventable. People.chose to be fooled when they flocked to this tech. I stayed off all of it to this day except the sights trying to figure shit out like gaw. No Twitter, no Facebook meta, no tik tok, none.
