Putting the US govt in charge of all this sounds great at first, but once corruption seeps in (and it always does), then it can become just another monster.
maybe but, it's better than what's available in education currently. It's hard to fix the higher education system because it's so infiltrated like you say so, better to start from scratch. Plus, this education is available to all. That's not the way education works currently
"Maybe" nothing. This is how every single one of our corrupt education systems has begun. going back to the beginning of these systems in Prussia in the early 1700s. The government has no place in education, period. Also, there is no such thing as "free" education. NOTHING is free. Everything has a cost.
In this case they are talking about taxing the private donations given to our current system. That would be taxing the Rockefeller created 501(3)(c) monopoly that currently controls all knowledge (all Foundations are really the same Foundation). That's great and all, but those systems need to be exposed for what they are. They need to be destroyed. What happens to that "tax revenue" when they are destroyed? Who pays for it then?
In addition, These Foundations are, by definition of Law, tax free, that's their whole schtick, so the laws would need to be substantially changed, which would invalidate the original incorporation of these institutions, which would destroy them. Again, that's great and all, but then who pays for the "free" education?
better to start from scratch
A "new" government run education system is not "starting from scratch," it is the exact same people doing the exact same thing in the exact same way. Expecting different results is... perhaps not too bright. The ONLY possible path to a better educational system is a Free Market education system. We've never had one. Let's try that instead of replacing Big Brother with the New Boss, same as the Old Boss.
All knowledge and information must be given equal footing. What is "truth" is unknown. Until humans are free to explore the truth, we will never be able to get closer to it. Any system that has a "curriculum" for a "credential" limits what is taught. The government can not be in charge of curriculums, period. Yet this espouses that as Bigly as all previous systems.
Our credential system (created by Rockefeller), which this espouses and even enforces, is a huge part of the problem. It limits our ability to see Reality. It puts thoughts in the box of the curriculum and credentials. It is 100% the opposite of the best path forward.
Only a free market of thoughts and ideas can work. This "solution" is exactly what we must reject. If we are pushed into it...
Quite frankly, it is "solutions" like this that make me fear The Plan.
Lets go President Trump.....My son has a BA in Political Science and I believe he was brainwashed, red pilled now but still paying his student debt and is paying it with a job at a Casino. I feel it was a waste of time and money.
So is this going to be another program in the Dept of Education? We need to abolish DEd not enhance/expand its scope.
The underlying assumption here is that college is required for all citizens. The reality is that the degree is not required for job performance, it is just used to screen out people.
Andrew Jackson fought this idea and I agree - there is no Constitutional provision for the Federal govt to be involved in Higher Ed. Narrowly tailored support for critical strategic needs can be subsidized by specific agencies. This can begin by returning federal support for the National Direct Student Loan program to the original National Defense Student Loan program, focusing exclusively on STEM education.
Trump called for abolishing or, restraining the Dept. of Education in his campaign leading up to 2016. He doesn't have anything else substantive regarding changing education until this Agenda 47 call to create The American Academy.

Gosh Trump is an awful, selfish, rich pig Republican dictator
He wants no wars, equality for all, and a free college education for all Americans

Named Agenda 47 for the 45th and 47th President, Donald Trump?
Hopefully their heads won't explode as that would be a huge gust of air....
