Religion no. Jesus, yes.
What do you mean?
Is religion good for society? No.
Jesus, yes.
Religion is man-made rules. Jesus is revealed in the Bible and shows us how to live. Jesus defines what real religion should be.
Exactly. Jesus did not found the church, that was the Roman Empire who needed to embrace Christianity because they could no longer fight it. The true message of Jesus has been lost to most people.
Alex O'Connor is a very scholarly athiest, he is out of Ben's league on this. I am very much a hardcore thiest, and say this.
Hoping to watch this later, but I'm taking a short break from working.
But my first thought is that before even starting a conversation like this, one has to define three key things: religion, good, and society.
Beyond that, without going into the specifics of which religion or religions, "good" for whom, and what type of society, it's really just an abstract discussion possibly to the point of irrelevance.
But maybe I'll be surprised once I get a chance to watch.
Organized religion as it is practiced today is good for controlling the people and fleecing the flock, and some of the people at the very top are as evil as they get.
Let's ask the jew.
When I say I am very religious, I am not talking about a physical church. I am talking about a daily practice of prayer, psalms, bible readings as lessons, and taking time to be just me and God, with meditation, and some repetition of prayer. Because of this practice, I think I am a better citizen, part of society because I use the Bible to guide me. I think Christian churches are good for everyone, for fellowship, giving, and joined worship. I do not know what goes on in non Christian houses of worship, never been to a service. I have participated in worship with Protestants and Catholics, and if I need to pop into a chapel for prayer, I will. Organized religions have a lot of laws and rules that are man made, including the priesthoods and ordinations, etc. that i think are false. The apostles creed is good enough for me to recite within any group. I think baptism is important, because it is in the gospel. I think the Eucharist, or Communion, is a ritual that is open to all baptised Christians, to break bread with one another in remembrance of Christs sacrifice, I think this can be done at every meal or gathering and does not require a Priest to do some hocus pocus over the bread and wine, as beautiful as it may be, Christ did not say that it requires an ordained person, as far as I know. If religion follows the brother and sisterhood of all baptised persons as the body of Christ, no wars against those who are not like us would happen. Christ named one enemy, and it is a supernatural one, not someone from another religion. We are to spread the Gospel, and kick the dust from our feet if it is not accepted, no wars, imprisonment or punishment, just walk away. I just wish he would get here already, HE is the only answer for a sick society. Yes, I think Jesus the Christ is good for society, without it, Satan would take over and that society will die.
I'm not a fan of either of these personalities but I thought the conversation was relevant nonetheless.
TLDR; Enlightenment liberalism seems to be coming to an end and discussions are being had over what should replace it. Some people argue for a return to religion, either because they believe religion is inherently true or because they see it as a useful delusion, or something in between. Others still hold onto the belief that people are naturally rational and capable of living without God or religious practices.
Open up the Bible. There you will find true religion.
