Apparently the Russians also managed to accidentally kill a lot of them as well. They weren't used to proper (rich) food and a lot died before they came up with some form of food paste that they could keep down.

I find this hard to believe.

Especially since the story of Anne Frank is supposed to be a fabrication (as I recently read). I think a pinch of salt is indicated.
