The Crown is separate and supreme to The Monarch, I think it was Henry 8th who mugged it away to the vatican, so he could satisfy his carnal urges.
No, it was Henry who cut off from the Vatican. Historically, it seems he did this in order to be able to divorce his first wife, but either way, the result was that the Vatican no longer had direct control over religion in England.
Yep, the whole story of that Tudor king is fascinating. How many wifes did he go through? Didnt he even behead one of the wives (The very one he cut off vatican to marry)? I think there is so much deeper story there if you can look behind the veil.
Oh, he knocked off a few, I think.
But it was actually a pivotal time whereafter, the war between catholics and non-catholics in England, etc, became a serious and ongoing conflict, and partly laid roots for the English Revolution.
I'd have to check my sources, but as far as I know, it became a part of British law that Monarchs, etc, NOT conspire or cooperate in any way with the Vatican.
Prior to Henry, there was a conflict between temporal authority (the Monarch) and spiritual authority (The Pope). But by the steps he took, Henry made the Monarch both the temporal and spiritual authority, thus severing ties with the Vatican and its power play.
Subsequent to Henry, some monarchs attempted to reintroduce Catholicism as the national faith, and revive the connection between the British Crown and the Vatican, but those folks also lost their heads.
I think Bloody Mary was one of those who was devoutly Catholic and had to flee to Scotland or something. Vaguely remember one of his daughters was the Queen of Scotland and the other - the famous Elizabeth. It looks like they jumped off of one pot (Vatican) and fell into the other pot (The Elizabethan liberal crowd).
