Mercator effect. It’s the mathematical problem of trying to project items on a sphere
onto a flat surface. This has been a problem since the beginning of map making. The best type of global representation is…. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goode_homolosine_projection
I am sure that many in the west think of Africa as a third world country probably about the size of Cuba somewhere off the coast of Europe. Few realise that it is bigger than all of Europe, China, India, Japan and the contiguous USA added together.
Ha! So true. I worked with a guy years ago whose parents were Austrian emigrees although he was born here. They had family visiting who wanted to see NYC, Washington, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, LA and the rest of CA and Yellowstone. They were in the States for two weeks. He had to explain to them that their itinerary’s travel time alone was more than two weeks. They settled for NYC, the Adirondacks, Niagara Falls (we were in northern New Jersey) and a nice family visit.
The mercator map is not "wrong." This bs has been passed around on the internet for several years. The mercator map is for navigation (compass direction, latitude & longitude) on the high seas. Different kind of maps have different purposes.

I am always intrigued by the various "true size of Africa" maps.

Most Eurotrash still have no conception of how big the U.S. is.

The peters projection and others.... https://www.oxfordcartographers.com/our-maps/peters-projection-map/
Very interesting, I had no idea!
At least you get the knowledge of being programmed to look in a certain way. Models rule. Take it from there.
We learned about map projections in... Middle school? Maybe earlier.
Time to nix the government schools.
