Yep the old testament is filled with cycles of the Jewish leaders rejection of God with practices of worship of foreign gods with the exception of a remnant, fallowed by Judgement and then revival. Finally culminating with their rejection of God's Son in the new testament.
There’s probably a reason God picked a group of people prone to that to demonstrate His love, salvation, and patience…
Well that maybe true at the time however rejecting God is still rejection regardless of genealogical affiliation. Now that doesn't mean at any point they cannot repent and come back into the LORD's grace.
No doubt, repentance is also personal and not corporate.
They (and/or “we”) aren’t going to be wailing for no reason.
Sadly many, including those who claim to profess Christ will miss the mark.
Matthew 7:21-23
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
