And all after school activities are cancelled. FWIW I live in NC where the eclipse will only be partial.
There was a full eclipse when I was a kid once. We were told about it in school and told not to look at the sun. We made boxes with holes so we could view it backwards by seeing the light reflected in the box.
What am I missing here? What are the safety reasons for closing school?
My thoughts so far:
Lawsuits. My child is blind, now pay us Millions.
Yeah likely. No one bothered to sue in the 1950’s. We just lived our lives and took responsibility for our own actions
This is the most likely and least terrifying possibility.
Edit: which is really sad. They used to use things like this as an opportunity to teach, to appeal to a kid’s curiosity. Now they close the school down out of fear, and I think out of laziness, too.
Many small businesses are being told to close an hour or two before the eclipse to prevent lawsuits from employees or customers.
What if the eclipse is the marker for all dormant terror cells in the US to go live? Schools would be high on the target list. Perhaps someone on your local school board has advance knowledge.
Seems far fetched but who knows.
Schools have never been closed for a solar eclipse before including the most recent one just a few years ago. Something is up.

Yep, my teachers used it as a learning experience. We also made the boxes and used sheets of paper. I was just in elementary school and we knew not to look straight at it. My home is in the push of totality and our local schools and some businesses are closed. We'll be at home having a picnic, away from the circus.
Here in Florida they made it optional.
The entire thing just doesn’t make sense to me. Seems like our “fighting” parents (WH and BH) are going to spar. NG in one corner and Illegals in another.
And As much as I’ve been wanting this thing resolved. I’m waiting to the pots and pans to start flying and the knock down drag out fight to happen which leads to no going back. NCSWIC will it be during this “sky event”? Who knows. Just have a strange sense of calm or call it lack of care as to anything that breaks loose, just want to live in peace. Will it be a big nothing burger…. Probably

We went through the same exact viewing procedure in... '79? '80? Don't remember exactly. I do remember the entire elementary school went out into the playground to view it. I'm smelling something cooking here. I'll be staying home that day as well, as it's also my day off.
We did that for the Challenger in Florida. That was a sad day❤
Our teacher didn't let us go outside all day.
FF, MASS SHOOTERS. this eclipse is a holy day for the Saintanist. If schools are closed they have to find a church, but it's on a Monday, so it's off to the mall I guess. Seriously though . Stay away from mass gatherings. We do have 40,000 fighting aged Chinese soldiers in America. Thousands of multinational fighting age men are here, no wives, no children just fighting aged men from dozens of countries not even from South America. Just stay home and wait for the shitshow to start/end?
Our school is staying open, however we are homeschoolers so what government schools do doesn't affect us. I have heard that it's because the schools don't want the liability if some kid takes off their glasses and looks directly at the sun. Plus I bet the schools in the path of totality don't want kids commuting to and from school when there's hoards of visitors who want to stare at the sun. I think it all comes down to liability. People are sue happy.
By me they're doing the same thing they're closing schools early but I think what the reason is they don't want kids actually looking up at the sky and viewing the eclipse, if they do this without special eyewear, they will burn their retinas to a crisp, and in turn the parents will sue the school district blaming them yes you heard it right kids are too damn stupid not to look at the Sun and have their parents sue the school and blame them.
Remember when quicksand was a big thing? I've been theorizing that they've been trying to make eclipses the new quicksand.
No idea... but all of the stuff going around the intertubes have scared some of my friends to keep them home for the day. (private and special needs school)
