The American Zionist Council (AZC) was an Israeli lobby group founded in 1949. It represented nine nationwide Zionist organizations in matters related specifically to Zionism, following the independence of Israel.

It was founded as a tax-exempt umbrella organization of American Jewish groups, which focused on Israel and included the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), Hadassah, and other Zionist organizations active in the United States. It acted as an umbrella group for public relations, outreach, and lobbying on Capitol Hill. Between 1951 and 1953, its Washington representative was Isaiah L. Kenen.

Kenen organized the unincorporated American Zionist Committee for Public Affairs (AZCPA) in 1951. AZCPA was primarily a "public relations" organization, emitting numerous news releases. In 1954, AZC divested itself of AZCPA "because its leaders did not want to use tax-exempt funds for lobbying."[1] Following its independence, AZCPA began involving American Jewish organizations not formally committed to Zionism in order to increase its credibility and separate itself from AZC's role as a middleman for the Israeli government. These efforts met with success, with AZCPA able to organize multiple meetings between Jewish leaders and the Eisenhower administration during the Suez Crisis, although they did not substantially change Eisenhower's approach to the crisis. AZCPA was renamed to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in 1959, reflecting its position that a commitment to defending Israel now extended beyond American Zionist organizations to all Jewish organizations.

The book was published on Monday, but nobody dared comment publicly until two MPs — George Galloway and Rupert Allason — used the Commons on Tuesday to reiterate the charges under parliamentary privilege. Galloway voiced deep concern that “Davies has been involved in substantial arms sales of Israeli equipment to Iran and other countries over the last 10 years.

Five years ago Mordechai Vanunu revealed Israel’s secret nuclear weapons programme to The Sunday Times. His photograph appeared in the Sunday Mirror and two weeks later he was in the hands of Israeli intelligence. He is now serving 18 years in solitary confinement.

It was the start of a chain reaction that has come back to haunt Robert Maxwell, the Mirror’s proprietor. Ari Ben- Menashe, a self- styled former Mossad agent whose mendacity has stunned people on at least three continents years, is a long-standing and highly-paid Israeli intelligence asset, and he betrayed the whereabouts in a London hotel of Mordechai Vanunu”. Allason spoke of “the disclosure that the Daily Mirror and its proprietor Robert Maxwell have maintained a close relationship with Mossad”, the Israeli intelligence agency.

Both Davies and Maxwell have denied the allegations. A pre-publication investigation by The Sunday Times into the purported Davies-Maxwell-Mossad “Vanunu connection” led it to decide not to serialise the book.

Sometime in mid-to-late September, Mordechai Vanunu walks into the offices of Rupert Murdoch’s The Sunday Times and Robert Maxwell’s Sunday Mirror carrying photographs that prove the existence of a secret Israeli nuclear weapons plant. He has recently been baptized and feels a moral duty to protect the world from Israel’s hidden arsenal.

There’s just one problem: Robert Maxwell has his own secrets, and one of them is his loyalty to Israel.

Maxwell sends the pictures to Israeli agents at the country’s London embassy and runs a story titled “The Strange Case of Israel and the Nuclear Con Man” on September 28. Two days later, Vanunu flies to Rome with a woman who ends up being an agent of Mossad. He’s kidnapped upon his arrival.

The Sunday Times prints Vanunu’s full story while he is in Israel facing criminal charges for treason in a closed-door trial. He is ultimately convicted and sentenced to prison for 18 years.

Vanunu spends the first 12 years in solitary. When his solitary is lifted, a red line is painted on one of the prison’s floors. He is not allowed to cross the line until his release on April 21, 2004.

Back in that time, Soviets used the Electronika 60, a primitive personal computer that didn’t have the capability to display graphics. With the help of some of his colleagues at the Academy, Pajitnov took the traditional geometric puzzle game Pentomino, then a very popular pastime in the USSR, and translated it into a workable game on the Electronika 60. He called it Tetris, combining the Greek word “tetra” meaning four, and his favorite sport, tennis.

From there his game spread like a coked-out bubonic plague of euphoric proportions. Soviets loved it. Perhaps the main reason for its spread, though, was the USSR’s utter dearth of intellectual property laws. At the time everything on Soviet lands belonged to the Soviet government: machinery, cows, businesses, and debatably, souls. According to Mikhail Potyomkin, a programmer at the Moscow computer center at the time, “if we had tried [to sell the rights], then we would have ended up in prison.”

In 1988, Robert Stein, a business representative working with the United Kingdom-based software company Mirrorsoft, contacted Pajitnov to discuss obtaining the rights for Tetris. Stein was of Hungarian descent and had heard of the game through business contacts in his home country. Pajitnov agreed to discuss the matter further, and Stein took Alexey’s reply as a full license to produce the game. And that’s where the legal madness started.

Even in its short burn of existence between 1983 and 1991, Mirrorsoft and its closely allied companies held sway across the full spectrum of software development, distribution, publication and promotion. With so much activity compressed into such a short period of time, this paper addresses the question of the extent of Maxwell’s and Mirrorsoft’s influence in, around and of the national videogames industry in the UK and internationally. Following establishment of the approach of the paper’s methodological position, the article addresses this question through investigation of five separate, but interlinking areas.

First is Maxwell’s hot-and-cold relationship with Clive Sinclair and his role in the wax and wane of the products and companies associated with this, including the underwhelming release of the “next generation” Sinclair QL.

Second, through correcting earlier errors in the literature, it identifies the actual founding date for Mirrorsoft, prior to Maxwell’s 1984 takeover and examines the relationships built during this time, including with Hungarian developer Andromeda and software publisher and hardware reseller Novotrade.

Third, it locates Mirrorsoft within the wider structure of MGN following Maxwell’s 1984 acquisition, a position even employees were not aware of either at the time, or in retrospect.

Fourth, it unveils the peculiar relationship between Microdealer, a videogames distribution company owned by MGN, Maxwell’s 1984 “mercy mission” to Ethiopia during a time of famine and the publication of SoftAid, a compilation of videogames which was intended to raise money for those affected by the ecological catastrophe.

Fifth, it reveals the history of Sphere Inc. and Nexa Corp. and tracks their widely reported -- but ultimately unfounded -- part in the transfer of GBP14M from a Maxwell holding company to the US following Maxwell’s death in 1992.

Fink's Bar

Part of the attraction of the exhibition was the reconstruction of the famous Fink’s Bar, a favorite watering hole for journalists, British army officers politicians, diplomats, the elite of the city, their guests, and dare we say it – spies. On hand at the press conference were the last people to own Fink’s, Edna and Mouli Azrieli. Edna, the daughter of the legendary Dave Rothschild, who in 1945 had acquired the famous bar from its original owner Moshe Fink, had also worked for several years at the Jerusalem Post, so the press conference was in a sense, also a reunion.

The goulash soup for which Fink’s was famous, was actually introduced by the original owner, who had come to Jerusalem from Hungary, and it remained a staple on the menu, which was also known for its other delicacies. Fink’s, like the Post, was opened in 1932. Among the frequent guests before any of them became prime minister were Golda Meir, Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Ariel Sharon and Benjamin Netanyahu.
