Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
I don’t understand why many people don’t like country music. The lyrics are so close to everyday life ups & downs. 70s & 80s is so good and I’m a little shocked some of these songs were played on the radio. Just a few titles from one playlist: Lovely Women Make Good Lovers, Kiss an angel good morning, Behind closed doors, I’d just love to lay you down, Slow Hand, Tight fittin’ jeans, Holding her and loving you. I’ve listened to these since I was a child, obviously I didn’t know what they really mean. No wonder the women loved Conway Twitty😮
My current playlist while grandchild sleeps. I have to drown out the road noise and the dog might bark.
I understand your point of view. I listen to a lot of artists that you probably wouldn’t find on the radio. I love finding the very interesting lines in a song. This song is a great example and I don’t even listen to these artists.

She put him out, like the burnin' end of a midnight cigarette
I had never been into country music when I was young, and later when I listen to some they are always good. Thinking back, country music was always portrayed as "boring" in the media in so many ways that it just stuck in my head without even giving it a try.
I guess growing up in the south during the 70s country music was just part of my life. It wasn’t talked about negatively in my circles. I grew up with 50s artists my dad liked, soft rock, disco, R&B, Elvis and country music. I hated country music especially Willie Nelson and the rest of them from the 70s and back. My grandparents took me to school most of my childhood and there was only one radio station playing in the car. In the late 80s I got into country music. Just in the past five years I’m really into 70-80s country music. I really took a deep dive when I discovered Hank Williams Jr and Alabama, my first two concerts in the 80s. Fast forward forty some years later and Willie was the opener at a festival headlined by Eric Church. I knew every song Willie sang. So subliminal messaging is a real thing. Enjoyed it so much went to a Willie concert. He’s a really good entertainer or was ten years ago. I still don’t listen to his music.
I like the older, what I call "real" country music and artists. My favorite though is Appalachian music, the Carter Family, I do love Alison Krauss and Emmy Lou, Johnny Cash, early Bonnie Riatt. I just don't like pop music and a lot of country is kind of like pop. If a person saw my playlists on any given day they would think I was schizo, there's a little bit of everything in it.
I love Emmy Lou but don’t know a lot of her music. I know Cash because my husband grew up on him and after 35 years I know the music and do like some songs. Like B Rita, never listened. I listen to new artists from Appalachia. Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers are in my top favorites. I really like artists from Kentucky and Texas. I’m into some artists that might be considered pop or more rock country. My playlist list changes daily depending on my mood. Hence my username, Moody Blue is an Elvis song about a girl very moody. I say it was written for people like me🤣 When I’m happy I love sad songs. Sad and I love Zeppelin. The only music I don’t like is wrap and jazz or classical.
Because moderm country is awful. Heard a song that samples the Doobie Bros..very derivative. There is the occassional good modern country song. I really loved Worship You by Kane Brown.
One of the best "gifts" my wife gave me is having me listen to the Kenny Chesney album "Old Blue Chair" That is some of the most relaxing, peaceful music I have ever heard...really good songwriting too
True much of modern country is bad, it’s all the same. I’ve seen Kane Brown not by choice he was an opener. I don’t care for his music. I can’t even tell you a song he sings. There’s some really good country from the past ten years. Then again that’s a matter of opinion and taste. Good thing we all like different things. I’ve seen Kenny Chesney several times, he’s in my top five artists. He’s under the country genre but I don’t consider his music country except for some of his earlier songs. He has two tropical type albums and they are very soothing. I got into his music when I was going through a very emotional time in my personal life. It got me through. I listen to his music more in the winter along with Jimmy Buffet because I don’t like cold weather and it takes me to summer. He wrote Old Blue Chair in the islands. If he’s not on tour he’s on one of the islands with a tight knit group of friends. I don’t blame him if I had that kind of money I’d be on an island somewhere. Be as you are & Lucky old son are his tropical life type albums. He has many tropical type songs on other albums. You might like some if you liked Old Blue Chair.
