Punishment for what? Who was the victim? Seriously? Who did that 2 grams of dirt weed in a 20 year old kids pants hurt? A kid that was otherwise responsible and worked a good job, payed bills, and didn't cause trouble.
I have since become a Christian and have been sober 12+ years and I feel even more strongly against that type of incarceration than before.
It's unjust, unbiblical, immoral, increases crime by putting innocent kids in with hardened criminals where they are easily influenced, and it costs taxpayers $40k a year.
It would be cheaper and more effective to send someone to trade school with drug testing or rehab for more serious drugs.
Honesty smoking weed, just like drinking alcohol is like you said, my business. The government doesn't need to be a part of it unless a real crime is committed because of it. Prohibition doesn't work. Incarceration for substance abuse doesn't work.
The US leads the planet in countries with the most prisoners (https://www.statista.com/statistics/262961/countries-with-the-most-prisoners/) and incarceration rate (https://www.prisonpolicy.org/global/appendix_countries_2021.html). Right now we seem to have issues with the corrupt people at the top NOT getting incarcerated, and we can't find a sheriff that wants to put them in jail and a prosecutor & justice system that isn't corrupted as well. I stand with sheriff Joe.
Focus on helping us with cleanup. Some of us have lost a loved one due to the "justice system" arresting them for a "weed" issue, glad you had a chance to get through your ordeal.

With great FREEDOM comes great RESPONSIBILITY.
Even with Americas restricted Freedom , promoted by the diminishment of responsibility , we can and are bringing back equality under the law. You should thank the Alcohol industry for the "weed" issue , but crime & enforcement are unpleasant at best even for crimes you disagree with.
It's not mere "disagreement"; casual recreational drug use & possession are literally victimless crimes, and so long as nobody is harmed in any way, what's the problem?
I definitely don't support full-blown legalization, as that's already been tried in a few states and has apparently gone worse than anyone could have imagined. I'm not for repeating mistakes.
But how can you honestly argue that a teenage kid smoking a joint with friends or even a working class average American deserves to get locked up for having some weed or even coke?
Let's be clear; I'm NOT referring to actual junkies / addicts who steal to support their habit, and obviously the cartels need to be sent to mass graves.
Assuming u/datasinc is accurate; do you actually support punishing innocent people?
Just because you get arrested or otherwise end up in prison FOR A SHORT TIME - BEFORE being actually convicted / tried - you support people like that getting punished?
But it was punishment and that is the important part. Your need to get right with yourself and god is YOUR Business.

Only for flight risks or potential for violence . Unless you are a J6 er
