A few years back I bought my husband a phone attachment that was funny as hell. Remember the part of the landline that you picked up and returned to the cradle? It attached to your cell phone in the headphone jack. My kids were fascinated with it.
Ask anyone that is a millennial or younger what a rotary-dial was, or what "pulse" was vs "touch tone". Then tell them you used to have to pay extra per phone in your house, and pay extra if you used touch tone instead of pulse. Maybe save the "party line" talk for another time. Too much at one time will shut their brains down.

On my candlestick, you jiggle the switchhook a couple times and say, "Hello Sara, would you connect me?"

Before cable, the party line was our best source of entertainment
Long distance charges were a thing also.
