Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
I've heard shampoos can contain ingredients that mess with your hormones. Anyone know a decent brand of shampoo?
Depending on how particular you are you could try the no shampoo method. Tends to be we over wash which leads to the body overproducing oil. Takes a while to even out. You can scritch and preen, use warm/hot water and maybe other more natural cleansers and detanglers like acv.
There are also some shampoo bars that may be good too.
There's an app you can download called Yuka and you scan the barcode it'll tell you if it's good or bad.
Herbal Essence honey is a good one.
Not only shampoo. Cleaning products and anything you use on your body. The toxic ingredients can cause cancer, allergies and breathing problems. I know about the hormone side but not educated about that. I’ll list a few I have used. Many small businesses and clean business are making shampoo bars. I’ve tried them and can’t get used to it. Some products will be considered clean but have natural or artificial fragrance. That’s a personal choice. I am very sensitive to both types of fragrance. I search for products that use essential oils or plant oils (kinda the same thing but made differently). I prefer plant oils but do buy things with essential oil.
These aren’t cheap but they have great ingredients. I’ve used these brands over there years. Grown Alchemists is my favorite but very expensive. Each of these have different types of shampoo.

These stores carry non toxic body products. There are different levels of “non toxic” check ingredients and companies will change them also. It’s a good place to start.

I haven’t used this in about ten years. I see it on “clean” lists a lot. Double check ingredients. Sometimes you can find it at TJ Maxx and Marshals. https://giovannicosmetics.com/
Sephora used to accept returns on products you don’t like. Double check this. They have a few clean products I will use but many have artificial fragrances and that’s out for me. They carry Briogeo, it’s a good brand. https://www.sephora.com/shop/clean-hair-care
Haven’t used shampoo but like styling products. https://johnmasters.com/
Get on google and search Yuka shampoo. Yuka is a free app you scan products. You can pay for the app and search, I don’t pay. I was looking for a brand starting with Y and it populated that search. I’m seeing many good brands that are a reasonable price.
If you can buy travel size it’s a good way to see what works. There are sites that help with brand ratings. I don’t totally trust them because they cater to brands that pay them. Although they are a good resource to learn about ingredients. I search an ingredient and go to these sites for information.

Lastly if you are concerned about ingredients affecting your hormones check the plants listed in the products. Certain plants affect your hormones. A breast cancer survivor can’t take certain herbs or use them on their body.
