I agree with this theory. Pence had a part to play; nobody likes playing the bad guy but just as important a role in the movie as the good guy. Still have some questions about them but I do believe they are all part of the plan.
I am confident there is much thought that goes into these selections. The likely are many reasons for Vance that we are not privy to, nor should we at this point. Fog of war
The mean teacher in Harry potter that all the kids hate and feel was jealous of Harry's dead father or something because he "got the girl" that was Harry's mom.
Turns out the kids perspective was warped because of their lack of awareness, context, and history.
While they begin to believe Snape is acting on behalf of what is parallel to a literal terrorist organization they (and the reader) eventually finds out (by the 6th? Book maybe the last) that Snape was doing recon and espionage as a white hat.
Snape always had Harry's best interest in mind at all times but often was.hard on him only because he knew Harry's life would be difficult and there was little time for weakness.
Snape was the asshole when he had to be because he didnt care. He loved Harry's mom. He respected Harry's father even though there were obviously feelings of jealousy, however - since they literally got murdered over night Snape gets over it and acts as a "silent" God father for Harry without the kids ever knowing.
He was so above/over everything he was never worried about perception. At the root of it the same evil he looked like he was aligning himself with was what killed the woman he loved - so externally while it looks as if he is succumbing to the evil, he is only patiently enduring and waiting to get close enough to the evil for his own personal revenge.

I think that is an excellent analogy.
