Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
So I found out my best online friend is hurting more than I thought.
I learned that years ago, he fractured his spine in two places, from when he had seizures due to renal carcinoma, which he barely survived. He's been in remission for a long time, but I'm ready to suggest fenben if it ever comes back. That's not why I'm posting this.
He's gaining weight. He's tried intermittent fasting and even keto, but he says that made his body go into "starvation mode" when he does eat, and put on even more fat. Hard to lose when you can't stand up for more than a few minutes due to your spine. He's also had many bouts of gout since he was about 12.
How do I help my friend?
And since this may be important...on top of ALL of the above, he also has a serious genetic disorder: XX male syndrome, which affects only 1 in about 20,000 people, and even that sounds way too common. He had to get a prescription for testosterone injections once a week, which was pretty hard to do since he's not trans--his body stopped producing T once he turned 40, and it led to a whole host of OTHER problems.
Check out Dr Berg’s keto channel if he hasn’t already. But along from eating high protein and fat, he suggests min 8 cups of leafy greens. That’s what really keeps you full and satiated long enough to fast long enough to get into ketosis. A lot of people leave the leafy greens outs.
Some people have never pushed themselves into 'uncomfortable' territory, and feel like their demise is imminent... Maybe check if the fasting period is long enough, because still gaining weight ... that sounds to me like they're not trying hard enough (with all respect to his health situation).
One of the missing pieces in a lot of keto and paleo is salt. For the most part, the American diet is salt-deprived with the exception of pure sodium salt for those who don't go with the pervasive low-sodium. In other words, lots of mineral deficiencies that can all be solved simply by adding sea salt. I've gotten a lot leaner by following a protocol that includes sea salt.

So far it's been working for me for about 6 months.
Yeah, I saw a video a few months ago of Barbara O'Neill talking about the TWELVE minerals needed for strong bones, all of which can be found in seawater, and she recommended Celtic Sea Salt, which I'm leaning towards suggesting.
So I know about the salt thing, but thank you anyway.
I love Barbara O’Neill. She has really helped me change my thinking re: western medicine.
👍
Maybe eating carnivore would help with the weight. Carnivore diet can heal things like chronic conditions, gut & autoimmune. I’m not sure about the conditions your friend has. I know all to well about your body going into starvation mode. For several years my chronic pain was terrible and that didn’t help my psychological state. It’s hard to cook when you can’t physically do things. I can’t imagine what he’s going through. Pain sucks but when it becomes debilitating that can take a toll on the body and mind. If he can do water exercise in a class or PT that might help ease the pain. Water exercise has very helpful for me over the years. I’m not sure about fasting while eating keto. However fasting when on carnivore does help with weight loss and you aren’t hungry for twelve hours or more. Many people only eat every 48 hours. I don’t know if I’d accomplish that. I’ve been eating carnivore several months. It might not be for everyone and certainly not trying to convert anyone. If interested, Dr Ken Berry & Dr Anthony Chaffee is a good start. I’ll say a prayer, blessings to your friend.
