The sight of Missile contrails leaving their silos and Nuclear Alarms blaring would probably be enough to get most of the world to collectively shit itself. Let alone the U.S. Especially since most countries have for the most part ceased to do anything to even try and protect the general Civilian population.
And while it’s never been explicitly confirmed. It’s believed most Nuclear Armed Countries maintain failsafes to either detonate them at a safe height or render Nuclear Munitions inert. In the event they are turned on the country who made them.
Hell change out the Warheads for conventional warheads or dummies. You still get the Pants shitting terror. In the General Population and many Military Personnel. It would certainly be a scare event. Even if the risk of Nuclear exchange was non-existent.
I don't think you understand nuclear combat. The concern is not whether weapons are mistakenly launched. There are procedural and physical methods of preventing that. The concern is that the weapon may fail to launch. When ICBM missile crews are being examined psychologically, they are not looking for airmen who will launch a missile without command. They are looking for airmen who will FAIL to conduct a commanded launch.
But once the bird is on its way, there is no turning it back. They have no means of communication. (That was one of the motivations behind the development of inertial navigation, the prior alternative being command guidance during launch.) The closest we get to that is with the bomber force, which can be recalled after being flushed on alert. And which is a unique benefit of manned bombers.

"the bomber force, which can be recalled after being flushed on alert"
Except in Dr. Strangelove :-P.
I have no idea why you were downvoted.
