After all there have now been several cases found where a doctor used his own sperm instead of taking it from the supply of donated stuff so it doesn't really seem all that farfetched to me.
Of course the easiest way is simply to donate eggs or sperm, but presumably there might be people who'd prefer to know who their offspring actually are, or to have more power over who the "adoptive" parents will be, or whose eggs or sperm are used to combine with theirs.
