Petrov was the duty officer at the command center for the Oko nuclear early-warning system when the system reported that a missile had been launched from the United States, followed by up to four more. Petrov judged the reports to be a false alarm.[2]
His subsequent decision to disobey orders, against Soviet military protocol,[3] is credited with having prevented an erroneous retaliatory nuclear attack on the United States and its NATO allies that could have resulted in a large-scale nuclear war. An investigation later confirmed that the Soviet satellite warning system had indeed malfunctioned. Because of his decision not to launch a retaliatory nuclear strike amid this incident, Petrov is often credited as having "saved the world".[4][5][6]
“Malfunctioned” sounds like CIA to me. God bless this man.
Came to say this.
I never knew about this... I wonder why?
I offer a belated thank you to him for his high morals and courageous actions...
One good person can defeat much evil. This is how God works at times.
We are calling it a malfunction? The same evil exists today as then and will tomorrow in this world.
What is amazing is how many people of that time had the knowledge to cause that “malfunction”? We could liken it to today. How many parallel have the knowledge to cause that “malfunction” in voting, mRNA, crime statistics, trump being shot, defining vaccine, raided trumps home, and yet at the same time causing that “malfunction” to be considered ok when people like Biden, pelosi, and such do more obvious things?
When I hear “malfunction” I think more like “malfeasance”
I believe they have a way to use code language in front of us and we will fall for it every time. Not all.
Thank you for educating people. So many judgements about Russians and soviets without basic knowledge of their history
I'm surprised he didn't spend a long time in the gulag
There were no gulags in 1983, they were under Stalin, who dies in 50s
He did lose his job and was pushed about from pillar to post and led a miserable life until his courage was recognized.
But he was not imprisoned, right
I am not too sure but?
The point is There were no gulags in 1983, people were put in psychiatric hospital for political reasons then and were kept comfortably numb. If he was discharged from the army for violation of a procedure that was a common situation like we have military discharged for refusal of the vaxx
I never said there were any gulags, i don't know why you need to say all this.
I have a reminder in my phone for this event each year :-D
