30 years ago I was in Georgia and went to a flight museum and was able to touch one. I remember it so well because I was surprised I was able to touch one. It was just sitting there with no guards. There might have been ropes.
Also back then they brought a stealth fighter to Houston. This is when they had recently made it public. They had two barriers. The outer barrier was a police barriers, but there were no police. The inner barrier was a military barrier and they had signs that said lethal force was authorized. (something to that effect) There were armed military guys. (with machine guns) Somebody in the crowed jokingly asked if they would be killed if they crossed that barrier. One of the military guys responded with "probably not", but they'd hurt you real bad. (paraphrasing)
I was always fascinated by the SR-71.
Finally got to touch one when visiting the air and space museum in Topeka KS.
Saw my first one in person at Oshkosh in 1990. It was surrounded by guards and ropes - no touching allowed.
