A truck full of lithium-ion batteries is burning in Los Angeles, shutting down ports and a bridge. It’s not clear what the batteries were for — but LA’s Vincent Thomas Bridge, leading to the Port of Los Angeles and the next-door Port of Long Beach, has been shut down for at least 15 hours now while local firefighters let the truck burn. State Route 47 was also closed in both directions as of a couple of hours ago.
Amazingly, a local towing company caught the explosion on camera from a nearby drone:

Gee, it's almost like they need travel restrictions in place for what's coming down the pipe.
Filmed, amazingly enough, by Pepe's Towing Service as the explosion happened.
yes, somethings fishy about this... how often do batteries explode in transport? i mean, when they're not being charged or discharged or used in any way?
not very often, i think
It looks like driver turned too fast / sharp and tipped over.

Rhymes wif NCSWIC, amirite?
That is not a container loaded with batteries. That is a container with some sort of control module built inside it. Not unusual. Might be some battery backup built into it and it is burning.

Same sort of situation closed the 15N to Vegas for nearly a week over the summer.
Would be nice if The GenPop would figure out the ridiculous current nature of "green" tech.
I've learned how much they have to tear the Earth apart to get to the lithium minerals; that's the part I don't like about lithium batteries.
