These companies use these men for all they can and then dispose of them after 30 years and only want to pay them 2100 a month in retirement. You would strike too if you had to deal with stuff like that.
If I REALLY thought it was a terrible deal, I would not strike.

You'd have a real hard time finding any kind of job that pays what the longshore jobs pay, especially for very little education.

That's why we have unions. If we didn't, these people would still be getting paid pennies on the dollar.
There's nothing communist about wanting to be taken care of after you retire from a job that is considered one of the most dangerous on the planet.
And nobody is putting a gun to the workers' heads, telling them they are not allowed to go find a better job.
