My grandmother was a very young widow with three small children. At one point she had no choice but to go on "relief". She hated taking a handout, it made her feel ashamed. Within a few months she had two jobs and never took anything from the government again. She didn't have much education and all she could get was factory work. Didn't matter, to her it was better than living off others hard work.
My father refused the free cheese from the Government.
He said he will never take handouts.
When I was young, the worst thing you could say about a man was "he's on the dole". I don't remember a judgment about a woman with children. The social security program was called the widows and orphans program.

Why I feel guilty for getting disability
This is excellent.
Should be a hand up not a long-term hand out even Bill Clinton was pro work requirements.
Work gives a person personal INDEPENDENCE for themselves and belonging.
Women and men benefit from not being grifters expecting someone else to carry them.
A slothful life is dirty and dishonest.
