Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Rules For the rest of the Site also accessible on the sidebar.

Frens, I need a little help on something. My daughter's bday is coming up soon and she needs to find her own health insurance because she won't be able to stay on our insurance because of her age. She just started a new career after a year in school to be a hair stylist, so she doesn't make hardly anything yet until she builds up a client base. She can't even get Medicaid because she doesn't make enough money to get federal help to lower her payments. If she just got on BCBS with no extra help, it would cost her about $350 a month.
Does anyone have any ideas on what insurance that would work for her?
https://www.healthcare.gov/
We had to do this when we lost our jobs but didn’t “qualify “ for Medicaid the ER coverage is vital if you have a serious situation. They really can and will turn you out in life threatening situations otherwise. However it is useless for standard care. Actually once we were allowed to work again after Covid we discovered we could negotiate with our doctors for cash and it was cheaper than our deductible from our work insurance. It refused everything that didn’t go through ER including our son’s cancer medicine. So have that expectation.
She has to wait for the “exchange “ to open. Do NOT under any circumstances give information on any website except your email. They are worse than warranty companies and they mimic official sites. The exchange is a joke and it won’t cover much besides ER she will pay more than that in fees so don’t over pay monthly but the ER coverage works well.
Is she in good health? Plenty of us here 100% abstain from the medical industry entirely. That includes insurance and routine visits
If she has conditions that need to be managed, I get it but hopefully she is fine from here to next year when the entire medical industry might change
This. Is there still a penalty for being uninsured and is it cheaper than coverage she hopefully doesn’t need for care within a system most of us no longer trust? Medical debt is dischargeable in bankruptcy if something crazy happened.
There are Christian bill sharing plans that are ACA approved. Have her check them out. She's young and presumably healthy, so it's probably as cheap as she's going to find. I think one is called Samaritan something and another Christian Ministries healthcare. Something like that. She can find them with a search. Good luck. And congrats on her new career.
Thank you. She really enjoys it but is now worried because she's not making money, and hates keep asking us for money for gas. It takes a while to start making enough money to live off of in that industry. She's been contemplating leaving the salon she works for and finding another job 🙁 I believe she will be a successful stylist if she just gives herself a little time. When she applied for a 2nd part time job at other salons, they wanted her to quit her job and only work for them. Just have to keep her positive.
I never thought about it but I guess it would take a little time to build up a clientele. I hope she can hang in there. Could she get a part time job in a totally different field, just to help with bills in the meantime? I say that because I'm guessing most salons don't want you working for a competing salon.
And I think maybe medi-share is the name of one of the companies. I might have been wrong about the Samaritan name.
