It is not a conspiracy theory. I think MS sold their part though. Bill Gates was going through the antitrust case and started this up.

Microsoft sold their stake to Comcast back in the early 2000s, and ended their web partnership, reason why they run their own msn.com these days. MSNBC and NBCUniversal (Comcast) have been effectively the same entity for the last two decades.
