Mexico's congress votes to charge cruise ship passengers $42 per head for port calls
Cruise ship industry players are up in arms after the lower house of Mexico's Congress voted this week to charge a $42 immigration levy for every passenger on cruise ships that dock in Mexico.
Well, we did just threaten to tariff them.
So now they are doing it to us first. LOL
Don't go there for a while and see how it works out for them.
True talk.
Amen. I do go to MX but not on cruises. I did it once a long time ago.
The difference between the two is that Mexico depends on U.S. tourism and industry. The U.S. suffers from the Mexican invasion since they pay little tax, use education and services, and undercut American industry that follows the rules and pays tax.
Ordinarily I’d say that Mexico would quickly retreat after it sees the impact on tourism, but from what I know about the New Mexican president she probably couldn’t care less if her people suffer.
She is either very stupid or she is trying to make a name for herself and it will go badly.
Must make negotiations a lot easier when you know you hold most of the cards. And the best that can be mustered by the opponent is a glorified service charge 99% of Americans who use the service probably won’t notice unless it’s pointed out to them. As our own domestic companies have already mastered the art of making up financial charges that are double or triple what the Mexicans are demanding on a seemingly arbitrary basis and we barely notice.
Now that it is coming to light here, want to bet many will be watching? Just like they did in the west coast trying to sneak in the Covid service charge or whatever they called it. Somebody caught it and posted it on social media and they have to drop that.
Cruises are cheap so I don't see an issue with passing the cost along to the passengers. Those who don't think it is worth the cost would simply choose other destinations.
That's right. We are in a tariff war.
This will essentially put an end to the day cruises from San Diego down to Ensanada and back.
Nobody is going to accept a 50% - 70% price increase.
I sure hope so. Cruises can go elsewhere.
Some Cruise ships will avoid Mexican Ports because of this. The merchants love to see a ship with 5000 passengers with plenty of spending money dock in their port. As people start to avoid ships that port there, other islands that don’t have this fee will be favored and will gladly take their tourist dollars. The fee imposed by Mexico is $42 X 5000 =$210,000.00 That’s quite a hefty fee just for one ship to dock.
Im sure they also pay a fee to dock there in the first place. Do they get gas when they dock too? Seems like between that and all the tourist dollars that are going bye bye 200k is nothing
That’s true, but, with every increase in costs, people are more apt to choose a different vacation that costs less. I’ve been on several cruises, all Royal Caribbean, most were close to fully booked.
That sounds miserable to me.
Losing that much will change their minds quickly.
This is to pay for all the migrants that will be remaining in Mexico.
Howls.
Mexican ports of call are all trash.
I wouldn't know but I can believe it.
Can confirm. They're crime-ridden shitholes with a polish put on for gullible tourist.
Not surprise any more.
If cruise ships decide not to stop there, it is Mexico’s loss. Maybe this is Mexico’s way of funneling money to the cartels.
The cruise ships could potentially do that. There's other places to go play.
Great! Help make Americans stop being foreign tourists, and make American tourism great again!
Yep, go elsewhere.
Just another reason to go to Mexico.
