Propane is compatible with the old R22 AC systems and actually works better than R22. Just don't smoke while servicing a condensing unit.
The manufacturers of refrigerants work with the EPA to make sure that when their patent for a refrigerant expires, then suddenly it becomes an ozone depleting contaminant. Time to move on to the next expensive patented formulation. Just like big pharma.
